The Department of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School and
UMass Memorial Health (UMMH) seeks a collaborative and dynamic
leader to serve as the next Division Chief of Hospital Medicine.
This is an extraordinary opportunity to advance the academic
mission, the research program, and novel clinical programs within
Hospital Medicine at a leading quaternary medical center.Reporting
to David McManus, MD, ScM, Professor and Chair of the Department of
Medicine, the incoming Chief must be passionate about building
collaborative clinical and educational programs of excellence,
mentoring outstanding junior faculty, and establishing a pathway
for increased development of scholarly work. UMass Chan, UMMH, and
the Department of Medicine are committed to building a high
performing Division of Hospital Medicine to train the next
generation of leaders in the field of hospital medicine as well as
elevate the standard of care for the acutely hospitalized patient.
About Hospital Medicine:The UMMH Division of Hospital Medicine was
founded in 1998 at the start of the Hospital Medicine movement. It
is the largest Division within the Department of Medicine and
includes over 90 faculty members and 30 advanced practice providers
(nurse practitioners and physician assistants). Clinical
Program
- Acute inpatient care provided to more than 360 patients daily
in a safety net quaternary care environment.
- Over 11,000 discharges annually
- Hospital Medicine operated newly renovated digital state of the
art 72 acute care bed building opening January 2025
- Medical co-management and consultative services
- Procedure Service
- Nationally recognized Hospital at Home program
- Physician Epic builders designing cutting-edge tools in
Epic
- Physician Advisors responsible for ensuring appropriate
utilization of care and management of denialsQuality Program
- Unit Medical Directors responsible for improving patient flow,
quality and safety on hospital medicine units
- Quality Champions participating on Safer Teams responsible for
improving targeted quality initiatives (Falls, CAUTI, Readmissions,
Mortality)
- Multiple LEAN trained hospitalists including 13 green belts and
4 Black BeltsEducational Program
- Largest medical teaching service at UMMMC providing the primary
inpatient teaching for a 125 resident program
- Three faculty members serving as Associate Program Directors
within the Internal Medicine Residency Program
- QI trained faculty guide internal medicine residents on
executing their own QI projects
- Undergraduate medical school pathway leaders contribute to
innovative teaching within the Vista Curriculum
- Multiple hospitalists participate in undergraduate medical
education through learning community mentorship, small group
facilitation, and participation in foundational coursesResearch
ProgramHospital Medicine's research activities, led by Dr. Alok
Kapoor, focus on outcomes research in acute care medicine and
engage other divisions within the Department of Medicine and
beyond.Leadership RequirementsThe successful candidate will be an
accomplished leader within an academic division of hospital
medicine and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills
that complement a passion for excellence and achievement.
